After working in construction for 20 years, our founder, Arnie Elliott, knew that something was missing in the UP: a place to buy high quality building products at competitive prices. In the mid-1980s, Arnie and his wife, Candy, purchased the old Rock Schoolhouse and turned it into Upper Michigan’s home for quality siding, energy-efficient windows, interior and exterior doors, deck materials, and building supplies. With several decades of first-hand knowledge under his toolbelt, Arnie made sure to partner with only the best brands in construction. He hired friendly experts to staff the store and encouraged a compassionate approach to each sale.
Though Arnie has since passed on to the big walleye lake in the sky, his dream lives on at Astro UP! Four decades later, we are still a family business, locally owned and operated by Arnie’s daughter, Jennifer, and longtime team member Aaron Robitaille. We still offer the same industry-leading products and knowledgeable service with a smile. When she’s not belting out “Watermelon Crawl” at Karaoke night, Jennifer can be found crunching numbers and helping customers achieve their dream homes. A Rock native, Jennifer joined the Astro U.P. team in 1989 and has fond memories working with her father. She enjoys the outdoors, camping, and spending time with her daughter Madison, son Austin and grandson Vaughn. Favorite Product: All of them, we only sell products we would use on our own homes. Aaron joined the Astro U.P. team in 1995 and is a self proclaimed, “Jack of all trades, Master of none”. However, we think of him as our Alliance Window expert among many other things. He is originally from Rock and now lives a tad further north in Gwinn. When he’s not at work he can be found going on family adventures near and far, sampling all types of cuisine or just enjoying a long nap in his Lay-Z-Boy recliner. Don’t judge, he works hard and deserves to relax! Favorite Product: Likes them all! Favorite Siding Color: Too many combinations to narrow down. Andy has been helping customers rock their remodels since 2010. Originally from Iron Mountain, he currently lives in Gladstone with his wife and 2 kids. He enjoys hunting and fishing, listening to rock music, and believes pineapple does NOT belong on pizza! Casey joined Astro U.P. in 2023 and his favorite part of the job is the conversations he has with co- workers and customers. He is a Gladstone native, and still resides there today with his wife and 4 kids. When he’s not at work “looking busy” and eating Sweet Chili Doritos with peanuts, he can be found outside, which is ironic since he is afraid of birds! He likes fishing, hunting, and camping and hopes to travel to Alaska to visit his brother someday. (Don’t tell him there’s lots of birds there). Steve started at Astro U.P. in 2023 and goes on a daily journey delivering products around Upper Michigan. He would love to take a trip to Yellowstone and the Badlands but that’s just a little out of our delivery area! Originally from Perry, he now resides in Rock with his wife Abby and dogs Boss and Pearl. Some of his favorite activities include hunting, fishing, bonfires on the deck, and watching Jim Carrey movies while snacking on Skittles Gummies. His most memorable moment at work involves a co-worker and a snake and he would love to tell you all about it!
