Astro FAQ: Answering Your Questions About Home Windows

Why are windows important?

Apart from providing you with a view to the outside world, windows help you save on lighting and heating costs! They help regulate indoor temperatures and keep the elements at bay. Plus, they play a big role in your home’s aesthetic appeal and overall value.

What kind of windows are best?

The best windows for a modern home are energy efficient ones! Decisions about style and color are totally up to you, but we strongly recommend choosing vinyl windows for their durability and energy efficiency. Alliance Vinyl Windows, which we carry here at Astro UP, are designed to minimize air leakage and heat loss to keep your family cozy and your energy bills down. That’s not only great for you, but for the environment, too. Plus, vinyl windows cost less than wood or metal windows. It’s a window win-win!

What makes Alliance Windows energy efficient?

Alliance Windows use advanced insulation technology to minimize heat transfer. Multi-chambered vinyl frames provide exceptional insulation by preventing cold air from entering your home and warm air from escaping. The result is a cozier and more energy-efficient living space that keeps you warm without breaking the bank.

They feature a low-emissivity (Low-E) glass technology, which has a microscopically thin coating that helps to reflect heat back into your home. This technology minimizes the amount of heat that escapes through the glass while still allowing natural light to enter. The result is a brighter, warmer, and more energy-efficient living space.

What is flashing on a window?

Window flashing is a thin and flexible material that is installed around a window frame to seal the window, preventing moisture or air from leaking through the tiny cracks between the window frame and the wall of the house. It’s an important component in any window installation.

Can windows be repaired?

Some window problems can be repaired. You may be able to fix degraded caulk or small cracks in the window frame. Professionals can help you fix more extensive damage to the frame, broken latches, small cracks, minor leaks and more. Before you go all in on a window replacement, it’s worth calling the pros to see if they can help you out with a repair.

How do you know when a window needs to be replaced?

Vinyl windows typically last about 20 years. If your vinyl windows are nearing that age, it’s probably time for a replacement. In addition, the following signs indicate it may be time to replace a window, regardless of age:

  • Drafts
  • Poor energy efficiency (i.e., the house doesn’t seem to get or stay warm)
  • Hard to open/close
  • Trapped condensation
  • Mold
  • Large cracks or chips

Can you install windows in the winter?

Yes, you can. Of course, contractors won’t come out to install windows in a snowstorm or extreme subzero temperatures–and chances are, you wouldn’t want them to, either. I But if you’re ready for new windows–or if you need an emergency replacement–you don’t need to wait for the snow to melt. A window replacement service can help you out.

If you have a window emergency and contractors aren’t immediately available, you can temporarily cover a cracked window with tarp, a garbage bag, or plastic wrap. Tape down the sides and avoid that window until a professional can fix it.

Can windows crack in the cold?

Windows can crack during extreme temperature or pressure changes. However, this is very rare. Old windows and single-pane windows are more susceptible to this kind of cold-weather damage. Thankfully, it almost never happens to modern windows. Vinyl windows, like the kind we sell at Astro UP, are safe year-round.
